Regrets…

During a conversation today, with a friend I have known for over 15 years, she asked me if I had any regrets.
The question stopped me.
My heart aches, I can’t sleep and food makes me feel ill. I feel so buried under the grief of losing you that I have lost sight of something very important.
I love you, that’s one side of the story.
The other side of the story… the part that means more than all the grief, all the heartache, all the loneliness… is that you love me.
I had finally got it. I had finally understood the connection that exists between two hearts, irrespective of distance, irrespective of circumstance. You love me.
I made a promise to you that I wouldn’t let losing you break me… I am struggling to keep that promise, but I won’t give up.
You gave me more than I ever thought existed. When I was with you, I felt whole. I know it sounds corny, but it was real and it was right.
When I’m nearing the end of my life and someone asks me that question again… and someone will… someone always does… I will see the memory of your face in my mind and I will answer…
No. No regrets. I was loved.
